28V-capable MCU includes USB Power Delivery 3.1

Branded EZ-PD PMG1-S3, it can be fed at up to 28V and is aimed at embedded systems consuming up to 140W.

“The device supports higher power capabilities defined in the USB PD 3.1 specification and leverages the MCU to provide additional control capability,” according to the company. “The products are ideal for consumer, industrial and communications markets for applications such as smart speakers, routers, power and garden tools.”

Inside is a 48MHz Arm Cortex-M0+ core and a USB PD stack. Memory is 256kbyte flash and 32kbyte RAM.

Interfaces include USB full-speed, 28V gate driver for external power mosfets, low drop out (LDO) regulators and high-voltage protection circuits. And there are programmable analogue and digital blocks aimed at sensor interfacing.

“PMG1 also provides hardware and firmware protection, including: over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, reverse current, secure firmware boot and signed firmware update,” said Infineon.

There are four members of the PMG1 family, mostly only 21.5V-capable:

  • PMG1-S0
    Cortex-M0 64kbyte flash 8kbyte RAM no USB
    2.7-5.5Vdd 4-21.5Vbus 1x p-mosfet drivers
  • PMG1-S1
    Cortex-M0 128kbyte flash 12kbyte RAM no USB
    2.75–5.5Vsys  4-21.5Vbus 2x p-mosfet drivers
  • PMG1-S2
    Cortex-M0 128kbyte flash 8kbyte RAM USB2.0 Full Speed
    2.7–5.5Vsys  4-21.5Vbus 2x-n-mosfet drivers
  • PMG1-S3 (datasheet not yet available)
    Cortex-M0+ 256kbyte flash 32kbyte RAM USB2.0 Full Speed
    2.8-5.5Vsys  4-28Vbus 2x enhanced n-mosfet drivers

All have one Power Delivery ports, except the 97ball BGA version of PMG1-S3 which has two.
There are other differences – see the table under the ‘PMG Family’ tag on the PMG1 product page.

Packaging for PMG1-S3 is 48-QFN or 97-BGA

Programming is supported by the ModusToolbox integrated development environment with the PMG1 software development kit , prototyping kits and quick start guide.
