Approach provides MQTT communication for low-power IoT sensor networks

Update: November 18, 2021

u-blox has launched a service that provides IoT sensor network developers with the versatility to join any cellular connectivity with all the benefits of MQTT communication. Its MQTT Flex service allows any SIM-based connectivity to utilise MQTT-SN communication at a predictable cost with on-demand scalability. It is constructed on top of the foundation of a scalable, high-performance MQTT broker and powerful Data Flow Manager, making it easy to communicate data between IoT devices and the enterprise. The service is uniquely optimised for sensor networks, asset tracking, and monitoring applications, particularly those that require little bandwidth and must run at low power.

The company already provides a global connectivity solution for any type of IoT device via its MQTT Anywhere service and IoT SIM card, facilitating seamless global roaming on 2G, 3G, and LTE networks. MQTT Flex extends the addressable market by enabling users to bring their current cellular connectivity together with its IoT Communication-as-a-Service.

A key advantage of the service is that it gives a ‘Bring Your Own SIM’ strategy that allows users to take advantage of MQTT communication with no logistical, operational, or cost impact of changing their mobile network operator. It also provides compliance to IoT project demands where government or local municipalities may mandate a local network operator.

The service also facilitates MQTT-SN communications over NB-IoT, particularly in regions where global roaming agreements for the low-power, low data-rate radio technology have not been agreed upon. The features of NB-IoT, including extended cellular coverage, can be beneficial for connecting to systems deep within buildings or below ground, such as utility meters.

All u-blox services are distributed via the Thingstream IoT service delivery platform. The intuitive interface gives a self-serve environment from which users can manage IoT device fleets, monitor events, manage billing, and have complete API control of functionality. Thingstream facilitates a frictionless business experience because it removes complexities and enables users to engage more efficiently and lessen time-to-market.
