STMicroelectronics has introduced the ESDCAN03-2BM3Y dual automotive-qualified low-capacitance transient voltage suppressor (TVS) that protects CAN and CAN-FD interfaces. The new TVS, measuring 1.1 × 1.0 mm, can save 75 percent or more PCB space, compared to conventional TVS devices in SOT23-3L and SOT323-3L packages.
In addition to protecting CAN and CAN-FD interfaces, the line capacitance of 3.3 pF allows the TVS to protect high-speed and high-data-rate buses such as FlexRay and USB. The minimal capacitance eases PCB design by allowing extra margin when laying out signal paths, said STMicroelectronics.
The maximum junction temperature rating of 175°C allows deployment in locations throughout the vehicle from the cabin to the engine compartment. The TVS also offers low leakage current of 50 nA at 24 V, which minimizes battery drain when the vehicle is turned off. This helps preserve the state of charge and maximize the driving range in electric-vehicle applications, said STMicroelectronics.
The ESDCAN03-2BM3Y TVS is housed in a leadless DFN1110 package with wettable flanks. Available in production quantities, prices start at $0.044 for orders of 1000 pieces.
