DC link film capacitors designed for low inductance and low loss winding

Update: April 26, 2023

New Yorker Electronics now offers the new Cornell Dubilier Electronics 944L Series of low inductance, high current DC link film Capacitors. Type 944L DC Link capacitors are designed for fast switching power conversion applications. Their device’s low inductance construction and low-loss winding technology make them excellent for the next generation of high-power-dense inverter and converter designs.

Applications in green energy inverter systems and level 3 EV chargers are increasing demand for power conversion circuits that provide more power in a smaller footprint. The series was developed with these applications in mind.

The series uses large diameter, non-inductive windings with low-inductance internal buss connections, yielding Equivalent Series Inductance values covering 10 to 15 nanohenries. Ripple current ratings of up to 90A at an ambient temperature of 55C are reached by employing low-loss polypropylene dielectric with metallised electrodes optimised for applications in fast-switching power inverters.

These capacitors are offered in values ranging from 33µF to 220µF, with voltage ratings of 800, 1000, 1200, and 1400VDC. The series meets a 5,000-hour life test @ 85C with rated voltage applied, yielding an anticipated lifetime of 100,000 hours or greater with ripple current or ambient temperature derating. The capacitors are incorporated in a UL94V-0-rated plastic case with integral mounting flanges for secure, vibration-resistant installation. All case sizes provide an 84.5mm diameter with heights of 40mm, 51mm, and 64mm, depending upon rating. Standard termination options comprise M8 threaded studs or M5 threaded inserts made of tin-plated brass.

Typical application areas include DC fast EV charging, high power solar inverters, and high-power motor drives.
