Ericsson, Google Cloud Partner to Deliver 5G, Edge Cloud Solutions to Telcos

Update: December 9, 2023

Swedish telecoms gear maker Ericsson Tuesday teamed up with Google Cloud to develop 5G and edge cloud solutions to help telp telcos unlock new enterprise and customer use cases.

The companies in a joint statement said they are working to develop new solutions at Ericsson’s Silicon Valley D-15 Labs, a state-of-the-art innovation center that allows the development of advanced solutions and technologies that can then be tested on a live, multi-layered 5G platform.

Ericsson and Google Cloud added they have already finished functional onboarding of Ericsson 5G on Anthos to enable telco edge and on-premise use cases for telcos and enterprises.

Anthos by Google is a managed application platform that extends Google Cloud services and engineering practices to user environments for faster app modernization.

As part of the partnership, Google Cloud and Ericsson are also piloting enterprise applications at the edge on a live network with Telecom Italia (TIM). The project, which will automate the functions of TIM’s core 5G network and cloud-based application, will utilize TIM’s telco cloud infrastructure, Google Cloud solutions and Ericsson’s 5G core network and orchestration technologies.

The joint statement further added that the offerings will help enterprises in the automotive, transportation, manufacturing and other sectors by bringing connectivity close to companies’ physical locations.

“We are proud to partner with Ericsson to help build a foundation for communications service providers and enterprises alike to take advantage of cloud technology and cloud-native services, from telecom network core to the edge and enterprise premises,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud.

It should be noted that India’s telecom market leader Jio recently entered into a partnership with internet major Google to use the latter’s Google Cloud to power Jio 5G solutions and internal needs of other businesses.

Under the long-term partnership, Google Cloud will provide a complete end-to-end cloud offering for fully automated lifecycle management of Jio’s 5G network and services.

“We are excited about our partnership with Google Cloud as we engage with our customers to leverage our combined capabilities to solve real-world business challenges for the benefit of consumers, enterprises and society at large,” added Niklas Heuveldop, President and Head of Ericsson North America.
