Weidmuller Battery Connectors

They are “engineered to handle high currents” and “designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions”, according to the company.

Connectors for cables from 16 to 95mm2 are available, with contacts made from copper alloy finished with silver and, approved according to UL 4128.

Predicted mechanical connection life, without electrical load, is >100 cycles.

These are two part connectors, with one part on the cable and the other on the busbar.

Both are colour coded depending on the expected polarity (orange positive, black negative) and also key-coded to reduce the chance of user error.

A locking mechanism fastens to two connector halves.

Picking the black-coded WBC-P-10BK-70 almost at random, it is designed to mate with a 10mm diameter peg contact, and handle up to 1.5kV in normal operation.

It will operate up to 250A, between -40 and +125°C continuously, and crimp on to cables up to 70mm2.

This current rating it temperature-dependent. 250A is up to ~70°C dropping in a curve (see data sheet) to zero just above +125°C.

Protection is IP20 unconnected, rising to IP67 when plugged, and the connectors comply with the UL 4128 battery connection standard.

“The shift toward renewable energy sources has driven the need for reliable energy storage as a means of balancing out supply and demand variation in the grid,” Weidmuller director Pete Tecos. “The functionality of these systems relies upon the connection to the battery modules.”
