Infineon adds Matter smart home support for PSoC 6 and Airoc product lines

“Many smart home products use Infineon’s Airoc Wi-Fi, Airoc Bluetooth, and PSoC 6 microcontroller products,” according to the company. “In this regard, support for Matter in Infineon’s ModusToolbox software and tools is an important milestone for the adoption of the emerging standard.”

Matter came out of the Zigbee Alliance as it rebranded as the CSA (Connectivity Standards Alliance), from a project called ‘CHIP’ (connected home over IP) which attempts to make various smart home technology work with one another. Matter defines an application layer, initially supporting Wi-Fi and Thread network layers for core operational communications, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to simplify device commissioning and setup.

“Several of today’s smart home market key ecosystem players – including Apple, Amazon, Google and Comcast – joined together in 2019 to develop and promote this new standard,” said Infineon, adding: “Many of the 320 million smart speakers in today’s homes are likely to be updated over-the-air to support Matter, after the Matter specification has been finalised.”

PSoC 6 is a family of battery-powered MCUs with Arm Cortex-M4 and Cortex-M0+ cores certifiable to PSA (Platform Security Architecture) level 2. Capacitive touch sensing it included.

Airoc are wireless IC for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi-plus-Bluetooth. They have a common software framework across Android, Linux and RTOSs, and are pre-integrated with ModusToolbox – which has libraries for wireless, analogue and digital peripheral blocks and an Eclipse-based IDE.
