April 17, 2024 — Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer of OpenAI, said in a recent interview that OpenAI will seek partners in the Japanese semiconductor industry to purchase high-performance chips required for artificial intelligence (AI).
High-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) are critical to the learning process of generative AI. But Nvidia, which accounts for about 80% of the market, is in tight supply, and Brad Lightcap said it is important for the industry to avoid shortages because he expects demand to be strong in the coming years.
“Our first priority is to make sure we don’t end up in a world where there’s so much need for artificial intelligence but we don’t have enough capabilities,” said Brad Lightcap.
According to sources, Brad Lightcap has met with a number of Japanese semiconductor industry executives. “We have the opportunity to work extensively with Japan on (securing supply) and we’re excited about it,” added Brad Lightcap.

OpenAI recently opened the company’s first office in Asia in Tokyo, Japan. It was also announced that Tadao Nagasaki, former president of Amazon AWS Japan, will serve as president of the subsidiary.
