PMICs provide reliable power delivery and stable operation

Update: June 4, 2021

Nordic Semiconductor nPM1100 Power Management ICs, available now from Mouser, combine a PMIC, dual-mode configurable buck regulator, and integrated battery charger. The IC is intended as a complementary component to Nordic’s nRF52 Series and nRF53 Series SoCs. This design assures reliable power delivery and stable operation while maximising battery life through high efficiency and low quiescent currents.

The ICs offer a remarkably compact form factor ideal for advanced wearables, connected medical devices, and other size-constrained applications. The PCB area usage may be as low as 23mm2.

The integrated battery charger is intended to charge lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries to a termination voltage selectable to 4.1V or 4.2V, supporting cell chemistries with a nominal voltage of 3.6V and 3.7V, respectively. The maximum charge current is Resistor selectable from 20mA up to 400mA.

The PMIC includes a USB compatible system regulator that provides USB port detection for SDP, CDP, and DCP USB host-type ports supporting USB current limits of 100mA and 500mA and a USB supply voltage ranging from 4.1V to 6.6V.

The PMIC needs no software to function and is compatible with all components that operate within the output voltages and power the device can deliver.
