Re-use and recycle Raspberry Pis

OKdo Renew, as it will be know, is open only for later Rapberry Pis: 3b, 3b+ and 4. “In return, they will receive a £10 voucher towards their next on-line OKdo purchase,” according to OKdo.

“OKdo has developed this innovative circular economy initiative to recycle, refurbish and reuse Raspberry Pis,” said OKdo technology v-p Richard Curtin. “The scheme will begin the recycling of a proportion of the Raspberry Pi’s in circulation that are no longer used. This is a part of our strategy and on-going commitment to sustainability and electronic waste recycling.”

Returned boards will be sent to the Sony plant where they were originally manufactured to be tested, reconditioned and packed in recycled packaging ready for resale across OKdo’s digital platforms, at a lower price than new boards. Okdo will offer a 12 month warranty on all re-sold refurbished boards, and make a donation to the Raspberry Pi foundation for each board sold.

“Raspberry Pi has a long-standing commitment to sustainability,” said Raspberry Pi founder and CEO Eben Upton. “Over 40 million Raspberry Pi computers have been sold since 2012, and the vast majority of these remain in working order, even after their owners have upgraded to more recent versions. Managed re-use of these surplus units provides an avenue to further reduce our environmental footprint, and we welcome this initiative from OKdo and Sony.”
