Smallest class of SWIR devices for portable and wearable devices

Update: April 29, 2023

ROHM has launched mass production technology for SWIR devices offered in the industry’s smallest class 1608-size (1.6mm × 0.8mm) for portable, hearable or wearable devices needing material detection.

SWIR is characterised by a longer wavelength than NIR, supplying greater permeability via different materials while less susceptible to sunlight, smoke, and other particulate matter. Adoption is anticipated in sensing applications via OLED panels in portable and wearable devices to add health monitoring and other novel functions.

In response, the company has launched mass production technology for compact 1608-size surface mount SWIR products (light emitting/receiving) by employing manufacturing technology created through the mass production of compound semiconductors, including visible and NIR LEDs. A lineup of ten LEDs for the light emitting side is planned in various package shapes (moulded/lens) and wavelengths (1050nm to 1550nm). Four photodiode models will be provided in different packages (1608-size/20125-size (2mm × 1.25mm)) and photodetector block size on the light receiving side.

Samples of these SWIR products based on this technology have been available since March 2023. In the future, the company will seek new areas for sensing by supporting a broader range of material detection in compact applications.
