Toshiba releases 12 microcontrollers for motor control

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corp. has released into mass production the first 12 devices in its TXZ+ family of advanced microcontrollers for motor control. The 12-device M4K group will be followed by 10 additional products in the M4M group in August. Both the M4K and M4M groups, part of the TXZ4A+ series, will be manufactured in a 40-nm process.

The new TXZ+ MCUs integrate an Arm Cortex-M4 core with a floating point unit (FPU), running up to 160 MHz, a motor control circuit A-PMD (advance-programmable motor driver), a 32-bit encoder A-ENC (advanced-encoder), and vector engine A-VE+ (advanced vector engine plus). These devices are suited for AC motor, brushless DC motor, and various inverter controls with a maximum of three units of high-speed and high-resolution 12-bit analog/digital converters (ADCs). The operating voltage range is 2.7 V to 5.5 V.

Devices in the M4K group provide UART, SPI, and I2C as general communication interfaces, and the M4M group additionally offers a CAN communication interface. Both groups have self-diagnosis functions for ROM, RAM, ADC, and clock, which helps achieve IEC60730 Class B functional safety certification. These devices can be used in motor control applications for consumer home appliances and industrial equipment.

Documentation, sample software with an example of actual usage, evaluation boards, and driver software are provided with the devices. The MCUs are available in the following packages: LQFP100 (14 × 14 mm, 0.5-mm pitch), QFP100 (14 × 20 mm, 0.65-mm pitch), LQFP80 (12 × 12 mm, 0.5-mm pitch), LQFP64 (10 × 10 mm, 0.5-mm pitch), LQFP64 (14 × 14 mm, 0.8-mm pitch), and LQFP44 (10 × 10 mm, 0.8-mm pitch, M4K group only).
