UK Supreme Court blocks Google class action

The unanimous decision means that similar claims against Facebook and TikTok are also likely to be dismissed.

“We are bitterly disappointed that the Supreme Court has failed to do enough to protect the public from Google and other Big Tech firms who break the law,” said Richard Lloyd who brought the case.

Lloyd is a former director of Which? and a consumer protection activist.

The case alleged that 5 million iPhone users had their personal data tapped by Google between 2011 and 2012 by bypassing default privacy settings on Safari browsers to track internet browsing histories and use the information for commercial purposes.

It was argued that the iPhone users had not suffered any loss.
