Called RH850/U2B, they are intended for higher performance use compared with the company’s body and chassis control RH850/U2A MCUs – it lists traction inverter, high-end zone control, connected gateway and domain control as potential applications.

“The future of automotive systems design lies in a vehicle-centralised, zone-oriented electrical-electronic architecture,” said Renesas marketing v-p Naoki Yoshida. “RH850/U2B MCUs offer customers higher levels of performance, memory integration and hardware-based support for zone and domain-control applications, while maintaining the safety and security parameters required for automotive systems.”

Built on a 28nm process, the devices include functions from RH850/E2x powertrain MCUs and RH850/C1M-Ax motor control MCUs, with more performance and security.

Hardware-based virtualisation for hypervisors allows multiple software systems with up to ISO26262 ASIL D functional safety to operate independently. For ASIL-D and ASIL-B applications, versions of the MCUs have up to eight 400MHz cores with four of them in lock-step. Integrated security functions support the Evita Full standard, including elliptic curve cryptography.

Quality-of-service provides a latency monitor and regulation for all bus masters to ensure minimum bandwidth is always available.

Dual-bank embedded flash allows no-wait over-the-air software updates, allowing code to be updated while the MCU is actively running application code, and enables operation from the original code if a failure occurs.

There are multiple AES128 lock-step modules “for conflict-free, deterministic safe and secure communication”, said Renesas. Gigabit Ethernet TSN is included with switch support.

For motor control, “integrated acceleration [dubbed EMU3S] works in conjunction with multiple dedicated motor control timer structures like GTM v4.1 and TSG3 to reduce CPU processing loads while achieving high-speed rotation. Data flow processor acceleration enables the CPU to off-load compute-heavy operations for complex control.”

Licensed from Nsitexe is a Risc-V-based parallel co-processor (DR1000C) with vector extensions to execute complex mathematical algorithms.

Also included is resolver to digital converter accelerator (RDC3X) that processes analogue signals from resolver motor angle sensors or inductive position sensors.
